KAIWAKA WAR
MEMORIAL HALL
We are excited to share some bright
news -the panels on the roof of the
Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall are
now
harvesting
solar
energy,
significantly cutting down on our
power bill!
This amazing initiative is made
possible thanks to the generosity of
Eric Jansseune of EWA-TEC Ltd. A
Belgian-born solar engineer and long
-time Kaiwaka resident of over 20
years, Eric has been a pioneer in
solar energy—well before it became
popular.
Eric has installed numerous solar hot
water systems throughout Kaiwaka,
Northland, and across New Zealand,
helping many households find the
right system for their needs.
Over the years, Eric has:
Run solar workshops from his
own solar-powered home in Kaiwaka
Hosted several solar info days at
the Kaiwaka Hall
Helped educate our community on
sustainable energy options
And now, he’s gone a step further.
After reading a recent update in the
Kaiwaka Bugle, Eric offered to
supply and install a full solar power
system on the Hall’s roof -
completely free of charge. His only
motivation? Giving back to the
community that he has called home
for two decades.
This generous gift is expected to
save the Hall approximately $2,000
per year in electricity costs, with any
excess power sold back to the grid.
What a lasting contribution to our
shared community space!
We are deeply grateful to Eric
for his kindness, skill, and
community spirit. His support
ensures the Hall continues to
serve the people of Kaiwaka for
years to come.
Thinking about solar? We
highly recommend having a chat
with Eric. As a qualified solar
engineer, he’ll make sure you
get the right system tailored to
your home and needs.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ERIC
FROM ALL OF US AT THE
KAIWAKA WAR MEMORIAL
HALL!

WEATHER
AUGUST RAINFALL REPORT
2025
Hi Everyone,
I hope everybody’s Jonquils and
daffodils have survived the strong
winds of August. The Brynderwyn
Waterfall has been quite spectacular,
even splashing out onto the highway at
times. The Taiwanese Cherry trees are
now flowering nicely. Anyway – on to
the rain report. We had 174.5ml of rain
for the month of August at our place,
over 19 days.
Derek recorded 131ml over 20 days in
the Hakaru Valley.
The highest amount of rainfall at our
place for August was in 2010 with a
recording of 227.5ml over 21 days.
The least recorded for August was in
2011 with a recording of 34.5ml over 4
days.
Take care, Karen

SPRING GARDEN
Spring generally heralds crazy weather
and that has certainly happened here –
one day heavy drops of almost tropical
rain followed by gorgeous sunshine
and sometimes all in one day. Still, we
need to get our garden veggies in place
especially when we have a look at pric-
es in the supermarkets.
Now is about right time as the soil
warms up for cucumbers, chillies and
capsicums. Hopefully you got your
new potatoes for Christmas into the
ground earlier in the month, but there’s
still time for more.
Don’t forget to get your favourite ferti-
liser onto your plants to give them a
boost and kick start the season. I’m
lucky to have worms that give me lots
of goodies to put around my plants and
fruit trees.

INTERACT CLUB
Our Interact Club will
have their first outing
during the first week of
Term 3. They have
decided that they would
like to have more
interaction with the people in the
Maungaturoto Rest Home. The plan is
to get involved in activities with the
residents. Many of them do not have a
great deal to do with young people and
this will be a great time for interaction
which will be beneficial for both
groups. This group hopes to have at
least three more sessions before the
end of Term.
SUPPORT OF KAIWAKA CAN
Our Club, at the initiative of Merv
Huxford, has found a way to support
Kaiwaka Can who are in the process of
obtaining resource consent to place a
pontoon at a tributary of the harbour
near McClean park. This will enable
kayakers and the like to more easily
access the water, regardless of tide.
DARGAVILLE ROTARY
Tim and I were fortunate to join the
members at the Dargaville Rotary club
on the occasion of their changeover.
As was the case last year, we were
entertained by a group from Dargaville
Little Theatre who have just finished a
season in “Out of Mind”. This amateur
group has won a place in an
international
theatre
festival
in
Monaco in August. While the story
was very serious, the presentation and
the harmony was fantastic. We wish
them all the best next month.
PAPAROA MARKET
President Tim has a stall on most
Saturdays at the Paparoa Market. From
his property (Puketitri) in Hawkes Bay
he has been able to harvest slabs from
previously felled redwoods that had
been left as undesirable. Not only is
Tim cutting this into slabs which he
will use to construct a house on his
property, but he is also using the
timber to create coffee table tops and
the like. Check out Tim’s stall as you
will see that the grain in this timber is
quite unique. Eric and his wife are also
supporting this, Eric with toys made
from timber, and Jill with beautifully
covered cushions. He has also had
some children’s wheelbarrows made
by Eric for sale.More items will be
added to the stall as they become
available. If you want to know more
about Rotary take the time to have a
chat to Tim.
NORTHLAND COMMUNITY
FOUNDATION
We were also fortunate to have Jane
Stearns and Richie Guy come to talk to
us about the Northland Community
Foundation. Not only does this group
provide grants to people in Northland
once a year, but it also provides an
avenue for investment.
We have hosted a “Meet the
Candidates” evening at the Country
Club, where attendees were given a
chance to ask questions of the
individuals who will be representing
our area. You will still have time to
vote in the Local Body elections, so
please exercise your right.

EXCHANGE STUDENT
We were fortunate to greet our new
Exchange student from Belgium,
Alina Servaye. Alina will be staying
with Jaime and her family.
Last week Alina did a presentation for
us. During her talk she covered not
only information about herself and her
family but also covered many aspects
of Belgian life.
In November Alina will join other
inbound students for a week long trip
around the South Island after which
she will visit Norfolk Island for De-
cember and January. On her return to
New Zealand, Alina will be hosted by
a Dargaville family for the remainder
of her stay.
Our Club is also supporting another

next January. Penny is fundraising by

OUR LOCAL HISTORY
Kauri gum … gum digging saw the first turning of the soil. Hakaru, especially,
was an area rich with kauri gum. Yet R.T.V. Linnell, ‘Purupuru’, remembers
being able to recover enough gum in the clearing of his last 100 acres, 1930’s,
to pay for the fuel to put it all in grass.
The Silch brothers, gum diggers, outside their
temporary 'home’ in Hakaru. The port for the gum
was at the point, near where the Mangawhai Tavern is
today, and where the hotel was built in the late 1850s.
Large exports of kauri gum, logs and timber were
regularly shipped through the port. This photo shows
them digging for gum at the Swamp Bridge in Hakaru.
Gum digging was hard work, and it was difficult to
make enough money. Diggers lived in rough huts.
They worked six days a week, and spent their
evenings cleaning the gum. From 1850 to 1900, kauri
gum was Auckland’s main export
The kauri gum industry continued
into the 20th century. In the 1930s,

invented. The price of kauri
gum fell, and by the 1940s
the gum industry was
coming to an end.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
CHANGES IN THE TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS
Farewell to Vicki, who has been a library volunteer for
about 20 years. Thank you for all the time and effort you've
put into the library over the years.
We will have a new volunteer or two start in the near
future, the details are being worked out at the moment.
DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAPS
We are going back to having twice-yearly swaps of books
with Dargaville Library, as we did for a long time until
recently. The trial of another method of exchanging books
did not work out as planned, so we are going back to what
works. We've yet to set a date for the next swap, but it
should be within the coming month.
Now is a good time to come in and scan the shelves for any
Dargaville titles you haven't read yet, before they
disappear. Dargaville books have slightly a different
printed spine label to ours - ours has our name on the label
in small print - we can show you the differences if you ask.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently, I've finished the Berger & Blom series of books
by Arne Dahl -
Watching You (#1), Hunted (#2),
and You Are Next (#3).
The three books cover a couple of
months in time, each following
hard on the heels of the one before
- I recommend reading them in
order. Sam Berger is a Swedish
police detective, Molly Blom is a
Secret Service agent. They meet
when they're both investigating
the same case from different
angles - and Blom suspects Berger
for the crimes.
See you in the library ~Wendy
